How Is Fat Grafting Used for Breast Augmentations?
Fat grafting is a plastic surgery technique where excess adipose (fat) tissue is harvested from the patient’s own body, purified, and then injected into another area for improvements in volume and shape. The destination for the transferred fat can be the breasts as well as the face, buttocks, or hands.
The adipose tissue is typically removed from one of these locations:
- Abdomen
- Flanks
- Thighs
- Back
The fat transfer strategy for breast augmentation can hold some key advantages for some patients. For example, since it is your own tissue instead of an implant, there is no chance of bodily rejection or rupture and no need for replacement.

However, patients must have enough excess fat tissue available for transfer.

What Happens During A Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer?
If approved for a fat transfer breast augmentation, your procedure will take place at either North Shore Medical Center, Salem, or Beverly Hospital. Anesthesia (either general or local) will ensure your comfort.
Next, Dr. Hadaegh will create a small incision in the harvesting location and use the liposuction method to remove a small amount of adipose tissue. The tissue is then purified utilizing decanting. Finally, Dr. Hadaegh will inject the purified fat into the breasts in a customized pattern to reshape and enhance your look.
Recovery After Fat Grafting Breast Augmentation
Most patients report some swelling or soreness in the breasts and harvesting location, gradually subsiding over the next 2-4 weeks. During your recovery, you’ll also need to wear a surgical bra to help the injected fat properly settle into place. Plan to take at least a few days off from work and avoid intense exercise for about 4-6 weeks.
